Current Exhibition SATOSHI TAKEMURA - POSTBOXES OF BN11 [BRIGHTON AREA] UNTIL AUGUST 10 What was your purpose in choosing the postboxes of bn11 as your project? I think the red postbox, like the double decker bus and the telephone box is so english, the Japanese flag is also red and white but we are more self contained in our circle our spot, the english flag is expansive, western, architectural. There are exactly 69 postboxes in bn11 area. I wanted to photograph them all, in this way I am enamoured of the situation, the aspect of the box and the time of day I photograph it. It is a sculptural thing, mostly unoticed, and yet in daily use. It is opened at least 5 times a week, it has only a single orifice, a hole to receive the messages of love and hate, business and pleasure. With the introduction of the internet, the snail-mail is necessary but mostly unloved. How did people react to your documentation? Most of the time people are very discreet, they think I am in Trainspotting, or I have a sad life of lists, but I think the opposite, boring is only the beginning, when I see the box opened sometimes by Royal Mail employees, it is erotic, red is erotic, when the sun shines on the crudely painted iron with its royal insignia of kings and queens, I want to send the holiday postcard, not an email or flickr, but flow of script and handwriting, rubber stamps and fingerprints, and for it to arrive many days later in my own country by plane or boat, bicycle and van, we should celebrate the mundane order of things, as a visual artist, the telephone or video conferencing interests me not at all, I want the postscript that says "I love you", an afterthought occluded by a franking machine. Postcards are available of all the photographs above, priced at £1 each including postage, please email the gallery with your order, or write to Satoshi Takemura, c/o Flat 4, 19A Selden Rd, BN11 2LN, Please make cheques payable to bn11 gallery. This is a limited edition of 500 of each postcard, signed by the artist. map of bn11 postboxes as photographed by Satoshi
